How Often Should You Wash Your Hair? A Guide by Hair Type

One of the most common hair care questions is how often you should actually wash your hair. Wash too often and you strip your scalp. Wash too infrequently and buildup leads to dandruff and irritation. The answer depends on your hair type, scalp, and lifestyle.

Oily Hair or Oily Scalp

If your hair looks flat and greasy within a day or two of washing, you likely have an oily scalp. Daily or every-other-day washing is appropriate. For some people, daily washing is not just acceptable but necessary.

Normal Hair

If your hair stays clean for a few days without getting overly dry or oily, every two to three days is the sweet spot.

Dry or Colour-Treated Hair

Dry hair benefits from less frequent washing — typically two to three times per week. Over-washing strips the natural oils that protect dry or treated hair.

Thick, Coily, or Curly Hair

Tightly coiled textures tend to be drier because scalp oils travel down the hair shaft more slowly. Once a week may be plenty, with co-washing between sessions to maintain moisture.

The Dandruff Exception

If you have dandruff, washing less often doesn't help. More frequent washing — with an active-ingredient shampoo containing ketoconazole or zinc pyrithione — is more effective. Letting oil accumulate feeds the Malassezia yeast responsible for dandruff.

Signs You're Washing Too Often

A tight or itchy scalp after washing, excessive dryness, or colour fading faster than expected are signs of over-washing. Try spacing out washes by one day and see if your scalp adjusts.
